Galata Bridge

This bridge links old Istanbul with Galata and Beyoglu, on other side of the Golden Horn. A bridge was planned during the reign of Bayezit II (1481-1512), for which Michelangelo was contacted, but no project resulted. In 1845, a wooden bridge was built here by the mother of Abdulmecit I, and this was later replaced with a metal one. The present bridge was built by a German firm between 1910 and 1912. It is 468 m. long and 26 m. wide. The central section can be opened to allow ships to pass through into the Golden Horn shipyards, (usually at night, between 2 and 4 a.m.). It is situated at a nodal point the area between Eminonu and Karakoy having the densest traffic in the city.
